The guidelines. Explained.

Your personal target is one number. Australian and New Zealand guidance has several. Chockers shows them side by side and explains what each one means for you.

Calcium target and reference: personal target 1,000 mg, average requirement 840 mg, recommended intake 1,000 mg, upper level 2,500 mg

“1,000 mg — says who?”

For calcium in the sample profile, a man aged 34: a personal target of at least 1,000 mg, an average requirement of 840 mg a day, a recommended intake of 1,000 mg and an upper level of 2,500 mg. Tap any of them to see what it means.

You can tell “below my target” from “below what most people need” — and which numbers are ceilings, not goals.

How it works

  • Reference values come from the Australian and New Zealand Nutrient Reference Values, matched to your age and sex, with a link to the official source.
  • Population references never change your personal target. You set that yourself, or accept one Chockers suggests.
  • Upper levels are treated as limits, and some apply only to supplements — Chockers says which.

What it won't do

These are general references for healthy people. Pregnancy, illness and medication can change what's right for you, and your health professional's advice comes first.
