Chockers Privacy Policy
Chockers has no server, no account and no analytics. Nothing you eat is sent to Quay Elements, because there is nowhere for it to be sent.
Last Updated: October 24, 2026
The short version
- Quay Elements collects no personal information through Chockers.
- There is no sign-up. Chockers never asks for your name, email address or phone number.
- Your food diary is stored on your iPhone and syncs through your own private iCloud, which we cannot read.
- Meal estimates run on your device or on Apple's Private Cloud Compute — never on a Chockers server, and never through a third-party AI provider.
- There are no analytics, no advertising, and no tracking of any kind.
- The food database is bundled inside the app. Searching for a food does not touch the network.
1. Who we are
Chockers is published by Quay Elements, based in Australia. This policy covers the Chockers iPhone app. It sits alongside the Quay Elements privacy policy, and where the two differ for Chockers, this page applies.
2. Information we collect
None. Chockers has no user accounts, no login, no server-side database and no analytics or crash-reporting SDK. We do not receive your meals, your weight, your goals, your photos, your device identifier or your location. We cannot identify you, and we hold no record that you use the app at all.
The only information Quay Elements ever receives is what you choose to send us yourself — for example, if you email us for support. See section 11.
3. Where your data lives
| What | Where it is stored | Who can read it |
|---|---|---|
| Your diary, foods, recipes, goals, weight and water | On your iPhone, in the app's own database | You |
| The same data, synced between your devices | Your private iCloud database, under your Apple Account | You. Apple stores it under Apple's privacy policy; Quay Elements has no access to it |
| Nutrition and water you choose to mirror to Apple Health | Apple Health on your device | You, and any app you have granted Health access |
Chockers uses Apple's CloudKit private database. That is your personal iCloud storage, not a shared or public one. Quay Elements operates no backend and holds no credentials that could read it. Turning off iCloud for Chockers in your iOS settings keeps everything on the one device.
4. Meal estimates and Apple Intelligence
When you describe a meal or photograph one, Chockers uses Apple Intelligence: Apple's on-device foundation model, and Apple Private Cloud Compute for the nutrition estimate. These features need an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence. Search, barcode scanning, nutrition labels, recipes and Quick Add work on every supported iPhone.
- Private Cloud Compute is on by default and can be turned off at any time in Settings → Privacy & Health inside the app. With it off, nothing is sent to Private Cloud Compute: your meal text and photos stay on your iPhone, and a described or photographed meal is saved as “nutrition pending” until you turn it back on or log it another way.
- Private Cloud Compute is Apple's infrastructure, not ours. Apple states that data sent to it is used only to fulfil your request, is not retained afterwards, and is not accessible to Apple. See Apple's description of Private Cloud Compute.
- Your meal text and photos never reach a Quay Elements server, because there is no Quay Elements server. They are never sent to OpenAI, Google, Anthropic or any other third-party model provider.
- Chockers never logs a meal silently. Every estimate is shown to you as a draft to review, edit or discard before anything is saved.
5. Camera and photos
Chockers asks for camera access to scan barcodes and photograph meals and nutrition panels, and for photo library access if you choose an existing picture.
Images are used to produce an estimate. Chockers does not save meal photos into your diary, does not sync them to iCloud and does not upload them anywhere. If a photographed meal is waiting for its estimate (“nutrition pending”), its photos are kept in an encrypted file on your iPhone only until you log or discard that meal, so the estimate can resume; resetting your personal data removes them too. A photo may be processed on your device or, if Private Cloud Compute is enabled, by Apple's Private Cloud Compute under the terms in section 4. Barcode scanning is matched entirely against data bundled in the app.
6. Apple Health
Health access is off until you turn it on, and the two directions are separate:
- Writing: when enabled, Chockers writes the food you have eaten (energy, protein, carbohydrate, fat, saturated fat, sugars, fibre, sodium, potassium, calcium, iron, cholesterol and caffeine), water, and weight readings you log in Chockers into Apple Health, at the time you ate or measured them. Planned meals are never written.
- Reading: when enabled, Chockers reads your history — not just today — of steps, active energy, exercise minutes, physical effort, walking, running, cycling, swimming and wheelchair distance, wheelchair pushes, workouts, weight, and caffeine logged by other apps. With separate permission requests made at the moment they are useful, the weekly check-in can also read body-fat percentage, lean body mass and waist circumference, and the dietary energy other apps have logged. Chockers excludes its own writes when it reads, so nothing is counted twice.
Health data is governed by Apple and stays on your device. Quay Elements never receives it. Apple does not permit health data to be used for advertising or sold to third parties, and we do neither. You can revoke either permission at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Health, or in Settings inside Chockers.
7. Food data in the app
All nutrition data ships inside the app. Searching, scanning a barcode or looking up a recipe makes no network request and reveals nothing about what you are eating.
- Australian Food Composition Database, Release 3, and AUSNUT 2023, Food Standards Australia New Zealand — CC BY-SA 3.0 AU.
- New Zealand Food Composition Database (FOODfiles™ 2024), Plant & Food Research and the Ministry of Health.
- Packaged food nutrition information panels as published by manufacturers.
- Open Food Facts — Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0. This is the one volunteer-edited source, and it can be switched off on its own in Settings → About Chockers → Data sources & licences.
- Licensed Australian recipe packs, used with permission and credited in the app.
Full attribution and licence details are in Settings → About Chockers and its Data sources & licences page.
8. Purchases
Chockers Plus is a one-off in-app purchase handled entirely by Apple. Quay Elements never sees your payment details, card number or billing address. Apple tells the app only whether the purchase is active. Restoring a purchase uses your Apple Account and requires nothing from us.
9. What we do not do
- We do not sell, rent or share your data. There is nothing to sell.
- We do not use analytics, attribution, advertising or crash-reporting services.
- We do not track you across apps or websites, and Chockers requests no tracking permission.
- We do not build profiles, and we do not train any AI model on your data.
- We do not use third-party nutrition APIs, so your searches and barcodes are never disclosed to a data vendor.
10. Your control over your data
- Export your diary from Settings inside the app. Export only happens when you ask: it creates a JSON backup file and you choose where to save or send it.
- Delete everything from Settings → Reset all personal data, or by deleting the app. Reset removes your diary, library, plans, profile, targets and preferences, and removes the identifiable food and water samples Chockers wrote to Apple Health; weight readings already in Apple Health stay there for you to manage in the Health app. Deleting the app removes the local database; to remove the synced copy, also delete Chockers data from iCloud in iOS Settings → your name → iCloud.
- Withdraw permissions — Health, camera, photos and Private Cloud Compute — at any time, without losing your diary.
Because we hold no personal information about you, we cannot action an access, correction or deletion request on your behalf — there is nothing on our side to access, correct or delete. Your data is under your control on your own device and in your own iCloud account.
11. If you contact us
If you email us for support, we receive whatever you put in that email, including your email address. We use it only to answer you, we do not add it to a mailing list, and we delete support correspondence once the matter is resolved.
12. Children
Chockers is a general-audience app and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone, of any age, because we do not collect information at all.
13. Security
Your data is protected by iOS device encryption and your device passcode, and in transit and at rest in iCloud by Apple's protections for the private CloudKit database. Because Chockers holds no central store of user data, there is no Chockers database that can be breached.
14. Changes to this policy
If this policy changes we will update the date at the top of this page. Material changes that affect how the app handles your information will also be described in the app's release notes.
15. Contact and complaints
Questions or privacy complaints: chockers@quayelements.com.au. We aim to respond within two business days.
This policy is written to meet the Australian Privacy Principles under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au. If you are in New Zealand, you may complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner at privacy.org.nz.
